last words - good bye, my American dream
so this is gonna be my last post for this blog that has been my diary since September.
to be honest, I´m a bit sentimental to close that virtual book and somehow officially end the past 10 months with it.
But I´m back home since one month and after having met my family and most of my friends again I finally started to realize that it´s over and life goes on. (in a very positive way, though)
so what did I do during my last days in West Lafayette? Above all FLYING, FLYING, FLYING... and I MADE IT!!!! I REALLY MADE IT!! :D since Wednesday, May 31 2006 I am a private pilot!! the wheather at the test ride was nasty, lots of turbulences and cross-wind and after the first two landings I thought I wouldn´t make it but the last one impressed the examiner and saved my license ("excellent! you couldn´t have done it better!" :p). yes, I´m proud of it - if you haven´t realized by now! ;-)
originally, I wanted to write about my experiences, my dreams, what I liked best, who I met, what impressed me most and a last sentence. I don´t think I´m going to do that. I had an undescribable time over there - rich of experiences, impressions and emotions. in any way, intensive might be the right word. a text wouldn´t capture that. but I´m going to write down some moments I don´t want to forget. all of them are part of this time but as it says - just a part... enjoy :)
- the feeling of being between unbelievably high sky scrapers in Manhatten
- sand dunes in new jersey, far at the horizon the skyline of nyc
- coconut murdering on the keys in florida
- sleeping in a tent somewhere in death valley
- vee-doub! --> fix a tire somwhere else in death valley
- mmmmh, yummy sushi pizza!
- handing water to running people (with no more power) at the NYC marathon
- rockefeller center at sunset
- on the hudson river on the way to manhatten with the sun illuminating the skyscrapers
- everything is illuminated
- Jackie and me having a wonderful dinner and singing our favourite song
- snow
- TV nights in the basement
- modern artist show in Newark
- dancing salsa and to "strange" music with people from everywhere
- the feeling of being at the middle of the world
- glühwein in nyc
- whitecastle burgers
- dallas, texas, god´s country
- hoboken by night and ice
- crocodile hunters (florida)
- jacuzzi under the stars in december
- smashing a racquet ball ball to calm down at Purdue´s gym
- the broken power shaft one week before dead line and a working machine in the end
- toronto - a city! houses! big streets! and no corn fields... amaaazing!!
- i still can´t roll the r
- inventing stupid games in a brown apartment
- christmas decoration...
- the smell of salmon coming home in South Orange
- the first time of being in a small single engine airplane and flying over nyc (wow!!)
- very strange movies with rené
- califoooorniaaaa!
- snow chains and chain saw men

- eating oranges from the trees and a lemon with a big promise

first solo - ich komme naeher!
so, nachdem mich hier jetzt alle zurueckgelassen haben, das wetter super ist und das internet in der wohnung leider auch schon abgestellt ist, verbringe ich den ganzen tag auf dem airport :) gestern durfte ich dann auch zum ersten mal solo fliegen und jetzt habe ich schon 6,5 der 10 required stunden klein-laura-alleine-im-flugzeug-ohne-chayce-der-weiss-wie-alles-geht erfolgreich :p absolviert. morgen kommt dann der written test und uebermorgen die praktische pruefung! ich wuerde sagen, das sieht doch mal hervoragend aus!!!! :D und dann, dann wird nur noch apt geputzt, letzte sachen erledigt und heim gehts.... vom erstensolo gibts natuerlich auch ein foto, aber da seh ich so muede aus (hatte die nacht vorher kaum geschlafen, dank fluids lernen und klausur morgens), dass ich das lieber nicht hier reinstelle :) und internet zu hause gibts ja wie gesagt eh nicht mehr... viele gruesse vom lafayette airport! (naja, gerade von Purdue Union) und bis baaaaaaaald!!!eure laura
FLIGHT UPDATE
due to the bad weather conditions last weekend (->no flying ->no x-country -> no license in time) I changed my flight back home.
new arrival: 12 May, 16:35h I´m looking forward to life in ghosttown ;) and my license. An hopefully a pick-up service from the airport :p
It runs, it runs!!!
This morning, after days and hours and minutes and seconds spent in the machine shop and 1 minute before class we finished our project and final presentation. AND IT RUNS!!! It really spits out tennis balls!! and even better: everything works just as it was meant to!! yesterday we got caught by the safety man... so we had to put metal sheets around everything and mount a emergency stop on it. Due to a lack of time the metal sheet cover looks awful - but the beauty of our little baby lies inside this kindergarten like eye-catching artwork surrounding... ;) Mission 1 of life at Purdue accomplished! Mission 2 is the pilot´s license. Friday morning next week is the test ride - just in time. But with this just in time succes we showed today i am confident that it will work out!! JUHU, WE MADE IT!!! :D (and after the shaft disaster nobody had expected us to be able to finish it...:p)

Grand Prix weekend
der Grand Prix ist hier DAS event! aber nicht etwa wegen des gokartrennens, sondern weil es den perfekten vorwand für breakfast club bietet. das bedeutet so viel wie sich morgens um 7 verkleidet in die schlange vor den bars einreihen für party und saufen. aber weil wir ja die vorbildlichen studenten sind, haben wir uns brav auf den weg zum machine shop gemacht und an unserer tennismaschine gebastelt. (na gut, der wahre grund war, dass wir behind the schedule sind...) weil wir dann aber doch nicht alles verpassen wollten, haben wir uns kurzfristig drei angeheiterten gestalten angeschlossen und sind zum eigentlichen rennen. das bild zeigt übrigens den überragenden gewinner. ...und weiter arbeiten! gegen nachmittag haben wir dann festgestellt, dass eine komplette welle von uns verbogen und völlig hin ist. juhu, da kommt freude auf! das schmeißt unseren plan ziemlich durcheinander, am freitag solls laufen und wir dürfen jetzt erstmal eine neue schnecke bestellen. aber draußen scheint die sonne, alles halb so wild, das klappt schon. abends sind wir dann auch auf unsere partykosten gekommen. erst bei einer hausparty und dann auf einer frat(ernity) party. die hatten beachparty und dafür den kompletten keller mit sand zugeschüttet... krasse sache!
und heute scheint immer noch die sonne, die wiesen laden zum liegen ein und mir gehts gut :)
Easter Impressions
Easter Sunday... started late with an Easter breakfast (because I just didn´t wake up, ops!)...
under the noon sun chris, flo, benni and me went to the Wabash river to hide and look for Easter eggs. there should be still about 15 eggs lying somewhere in the bushes we couldn´t find anymore *g* by the way, we didn´t only find eggs but also a snake that made its way just some meters ahead of us! discussion topic and fear factor no. 1. (...and I thought I´m surrounded by strong men! *g*) after some research, the guys found out it was a poisonous water snake. well, whatever, we had heaps of fun out there!! and not to forget: the home made blueberry cake with m&m´s Easter picture ;)

HAPPY EASTER (less than three :o)
Gestern gabs hier eine Tornado Warnung. Das heißt, die Tornadosirenen gehen an und im Fernseher piept es auf jedem Sender mit der Warnung "A tornado was detected in your area" Großes Drama, aber außer einem netten Gewitter ist nicht viel passiert. Davor haben wir was sehr seltenes gemacht: geflackt und gelesen! Und zwar am Wabash auf dem tollen Airbed noch aus California :D Es ist echt nett da, wenn man sich den Kläranlagenlärm wegdenkt... Aber im Regen wird der sowieso übertönt. Jetzt ist wieder strahlender Sonnenschein, die Vögel singen, über uns fliegen die Flugzeuge hinweg und zu Hause würde wohl das Freibad rufen. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit ist es hier Sommer geworden! Und nachher gehts (wie immer :p) fliegen! JUHU!
Achja, gestern beim Tuberkulosetest ist mir noch was aufgefallen: Da gibts doch tatsächlich am Check-in/Check-out Schalter eine Blumenvase mit Blumen drin und zwischen den Stengeln schwimmt ein lebender Fisch! Und sowas nennt sich Student Health Center - das ist mir doch etwas suspekt! Naja, hoffen wir mal, dass am Monatg mein Arm hubbelfrei ist.
