germany in nyc, first snow, and no sleep

the upcoming weekend i spent in new york city - THE city. I drove along my favourite highway -skyway actually- (the picture) and met marc in chinatown to start our christmas shopping. since we just couldn´t manage to meet krisztina and jens in that big city we spent a day absorbing the christmas atmosphere. the only thing that was missing was the smell. after chinatown we made our way to little italy, had a cappuccino in a nice small cafe, were amazed about the plastic christmas decoration of a church and the huge snow bowls outside the restaurants

(they move and moving styropor pretends the snow) and went all the way up to the union square. there is a nice handscraft christmas market during christmas time with lots of arts and all that good stuff you would find on a german christmas market, too. ...except food. and the only thing that was really missing was a big mug of glühwein. we also met an artist that painted us a little picture on the back of a magnet. at night i went to east village to celebrate mario´s birthday. he´s also a german studiing at seton hall, so his idea was to invite everybody to a german bar. Imagine a bavarian restaurant (owned by germans, so nothing disney like) filled with a crowd of students screaming german schlager, we would never listen to in germany but that are so much fun when you are away from home... plus they had fresh bretzeln! yumm! and i lost my voice :) i guess, everyone had a fun time!

after that we went on to another loungebar. and then back home. this was kind of an odysee because that night the first snow fell and the streets were more likely to used by iceskaters than by cars... so it took us the whole night to get home! and that sunday i just went to bed at 1.30pm and slept the whole day...
knicks vs bulls, christmas tree, and sushiparty
on wednesday, 11/30, we went to a NBA game in Madison Square Garden: New York Knicks vs. Chicago Bulls. It was a very close game with national hymne in the beginning, a huge stadium, a lot of show, a great atmosphere, and the Knicks won. Surprisingly, most of the people left 10 minutes before the game was actually over although their team was just about to win. That´s New York City style, I guess.

the same night the enlightenment of the rockefeller christmas tree took place with a big show. That we missed because of the game but we were told that it wasn´t that spectacular except for being in a huge crowd with lots of police. we still could fight our way through the crowd after the game and had a glance at the tree... but i saw it so many times all the way to christmas i will add a picture later on. actually, it seems to be really small just next to the rock and the decoration was much less beautiful than i had expected it be. BUT: it´s the rockefeller christmas tree!! so who cares?! ;)
I just can´t get enough...that friday we then had a sushi party in our house. we bought the whole sushi stocks of kings, some mussels, bread and cake and together with the wine mario and rene and falk brought, we had a delicious meal and a fun time....
Dallas, God´s Country
Happy Thanksgiving!
In Dallas they have too much space... and too much money as well. everything is unbelievably spread out and just huge. skyscrapers are not as high as in Manhatten but just big. everything is big. big cars, big houses, big road lanes, a huge airport, a big energy usage and a huge horizon since everything is flat. and in comparison to nyc the city is very clean. whatever could be needed and takes enough space - the city is gonna build it. not only buildings but also "nature" like great lakes (in the middle of he Texas desert).
so i made a big trip to God´s Country in a small airplane but travelling business class...THAT was awsome!! :) now i know why the tickets are so much more expensive... the taste of how life will be in 10 years *ggg* just kidding!
in Texas, I was extremely warmly welcomed. My supervisor has a big family (of course - it´s god´s country! :)) - very very nice and open people!! this experience is something that i definitely will keep.
I also got an invitation to Mexiko City! Too bad, the Florida flight was already booked.... ;) but there will be another time after my travelling here :)
the farm where "Dallas" was filmed (the only thing that is smaller than expected....)
